How To Cut Hair At Home - Tools

!±8± How To Cut Hair At Home - Tools

There are three methods of cutting hair. They are scissor cutting, clipper cutting and razor cutting. We will focus on scissor cutting and clipper cutting because razor cutting is a much more advanced technique which requires a significantly more amount of practice time and it requires much more finger strength. However, the razor can be great for adding texture. Regardless of the method you choose it will require a certain set of tools. Some tools you may use are a cape, spray bottle, 7 inch and rat-tail combs, butterfly or similar type hair clips, hair cutting scissors, clippers and trimmers, clipper guards and thinning shears. You should be able to get all of these supplies at a beauty store near you. Make sure to call ahead of time and find out if they sell products to the general public because a lot of beauty supply stores are actually distributors for licensed professionals only.

When selecting a cape you will notice there are many types to choose from. You will see hair cutting capes, color or chemical service capes, multipurpose capes etc. I recommend trying to find one that is light weight and not too bulky. For example, color and chemical capes are made of a thick plastic to ensure the clients clothes don't get stained with color or get saturated with perm solution. I have found these capes to be too bulky to use for cutting hair so I prefer a cape that is light weight and made of cloth. If you're trying to cut cost you can use a torn garbage bag but please don't use this technique on a small child due to the risk of suffocation. I would avoid using a towel because it is really hard to wrap around the person without a lot of the bulk getting in the way.

The most common comb used when cutting hair is the 7 inch styling comb. It is a great tool for many reasons. First of all, the spacing is different on either side of the comb. One side has teeth spaced really close together and the other has teeth spaced a little further apart. This allows for different amounts of tension. When the teeth are spaced closer together you can comb the hair with much more tension. This is great for creating very precise lines to cut. When the teeth are spaced further apart, it allows you to work with larger amounts of hair. This comb also has markings at every inch which makes it easy for you to determine how much hair to cut or how much hair to leave on the head after cutting.

Another comb I like to use is the rat-tail comb. This comb is great for precisely sectioning hair because of its pointy end. Also, the spacing of the teeth is close together so it works great for stretching small sections of hair in order to cut precise lines.

When selecting clips there is no need to be picky. The main idea when selecting clips is to make sure it will hold a significant amount of hair since it will be used to clip large sections of hair out-of-the-way.

Hair cutting scissors are a must. You absolutely cannot do a decent haircut without them. Really sharp craft scissors will not do the trick. Also, just like you wouldn't use craft scissors to cut hair, don't use your hair cutting scissors to cut anything but hair. Hair cutting scissors come in a variety of shapes and functionality. You don't need to get really fancy when selecting a pair. I would recommend the scissors be a minimum of 5 ¼ inches to a maximum of 5 ¾ inches long.

Scissors or Shears Tensioning for the Professional Hair Stylist

Hair Stylists, Hair Dressers, Cosmetologists either don't or don't know how to properly adjust the "TENSION" on scissors or shears. I have seen it over and over again as I go into Hair Salons to sharpen scissors or shears. I can't even begin to tell you how "extremely" important the proper tensioning of your hair cutting shears or scissors is to not only the cutting, but, how long your shears cut properly. www.xzactashears.com

Translating Hairstylist Lingo - What Will My Hair Look Like If My Stylist Does That?

!±8± Translating Hairstylist Lingo - What Will My Hair Look Like If My Stylist Does That?

Good communication between you and your stylist will make both of you happier. You'll have fewer bad hair days and she'll have more satisfied clients. But not every hair stylist knows how to translate hairspeak into plain English (sorry, I can't help you with other languages).

So, you must ask, ask and ask again for your hairstylist to explain what she's doing to your hair, why she thinks it's a good idea, and how you can recreate the look at home. To keep her from thinking you're a total n00b, print this guide to hairspeak out and review it before you go into the hair salon.

When your hairstylist says she'd like to give you a style that's:

CHOPPY

A choppy style has various lengths usually done with a razor.

Thick, straight hair cut short is the typical choppy hairstyle but mid-length hair can go choppy too. You'll need regular trims since letting a choppy hairstyle grow out looks ragged. It's a good way to cut back on the blow drier time for thick hair and gives you a young, fun look.

BEACHY

She means that wind-tousled, wavy look that swimmers or surfers (get it, beach dwellers?) may have.

If your hair has a bit of a natural wave and is reasonably thick, this fairly low maintenance look could work for you. You'll let it dry without heat and apply a spray or gel.

It's usually an above the shoulder hairstyle since it tends to just look messy with longer hair.

Products you'll need:

oVolumizing spray
oStraightening balm (if you have thick, course hair)
oHair dryer
oA 1-inch barrel curling iron
oPonytail holder and bobby pins
oShine serum
oHairspray
oSaltwater spray

OVERDIRECTION

Isn't a cut it's a blowdrying technique.  By blowing out your hair to the opposite side and then flipping it over on the part side, you get more volume. At home, sitting down and flipping your hair over while drying some of the underside can get you this effect.

PIECEY

Another after effect. Your hairstylist will use wax or hair gel to stick the ends together and then use her fingers to break your hair up into 1-3 inch sections. It's often used on a choppy short cut to create texture.

STRUCTURE

Here she's talking about giving you a geometric cut like a bob. You'll need the right size roller brush to recreate the smooth finish at home.

TEXTURIZING

Can be used on curly hair to make it smoother or on flat hair to make it look fuller! Texturizing curly hair involves cutting diagonally. and involves layers for naturally flat hair.

THINNING OUT

To remove some of the bulk from thick hair, a razor or thinning shears are used. Starting about an inch from the scalp and going to the ends. You usually have to ask for this and your stylist should refuse if you have fine, dry or damaged hair as it will produce massive frizzies.

GIVE YOUR HAIR MOVEMENT

When you stylist says she wants to give your hair some movement, she's usually talking about adding layers to mid-length hair to make it lighter and allow it to swing and bounce. The layers shouldn't start above your ears. This cut allows you to wear your hair down without it looking flat. If you tell your stylist you want to, she can start the layers low enough for you to pull your hair into a ponytail.

Got more hairspeak you want explained? Shoot me an email and I'll write up another hairstylist lingo translation guide.

Do-It-Yourself Hair Shears Sharpening

!±8± Do-It-Yourself Hair Shears Sharpening

Just as a painter uses his paintbrush in every art work that he does, a hair stylist also uses his hair shears in his everyday styling tasks. But due to frequent usage, hair shears are prone to wear and tear. The blades might no longer be as sharp as before, and this might lead to imprecise haircuts. With this, it is deemed necessary for the hair dresser to sharpen his hair shears for improved performance.

But then, with this situation in mind, a question now arises, where and who should sharpen the already dull hair shears?

First option would be to take it back to the supply or product store from which it was purchased. Most stores offer free sharpening services for a defined period of time, especially for high-end styling tools which are under warranty terms. But for the typical hairstylist, this could be a disadvantage because this would mean that the shears would be kept away for a couple of days or so.

The second option would be to seek a scissor sharpener's service. This would be done in a much quicker pace, but often times, it could be more costly to avail.

This leaves the hairstylist with the last option to sharpen his hair shears by himself, right on his very own home.

But with so doing, the hair dresser must not be afraid to do the sharpening process, especially with high-quality hair shears. Being of high-end class, these styling tools would not lose its quality solely because it was not sharpened by a professional.

If the stylist has no knowledge as to how the sharpening process is done, he could always search for tips on how it should be done. The internet provides countless "how to" sites which could offer practical tips in sharpening styling instruments. Anyone could just search for instructional videos pertaining to sharpening.

It would also be best to ask around and fetch for advices and suggestions. It is a popular practice to sharpen hair shears using sand paper.

With sharpening hair shears, you can sharpen your experience!
